The New Payments Platform is an initiative from the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) which will change how payments are processed and settled.  The main objective of the New Payments Platform is to have all of Australia’s financial institutions facilitating real-time payments.

Once live in 2017 the New Payments Platform will provide for the same-day settlement of bulk and direct payments, real-time retail payments, and the ability to finalise low-value payments outside banking hours. The RBA also proposes the New Payments Platform enable banks to eliminate the BSB/account number system in favour of a single identifying number for receivers of payments.
